Many first-time tournament players faced seasoned opponents at the Marlborough Tennis Club junior championships at the Forrest Winery Marlborough Tennis Centre over the weekend.
Marlborough's top female, Lily O'Fagan, was too strong in the 14s girls' grade and easily beat Abbey Hogg in the final. Nine-year-old Kyla Otway beat Alice Roughan to win the 12s girls' competition, with Millie Winstanley taking the 10s girls' title ahead of Decam Ahmed.
In the boys' divisions, 16s top seed Andrew Forgesson beat Nick McLauchlan in the final, while Lee Harborne beat Josh Winter for the 14s title. In the 12s, Joshua Gwynne beat Torban Otway 6-1 6-2 in the final. Jonty Zydenbos, the No 1 seed, won the 10s boys' crown against Bright Asiamah.
In the doubles, the boys' winners were McLauchlan and Mitchell Smith (16s), Otway and Gwynne (12s), and Zydenbos and Nick Hogg (12s). The girls' winners were Kate Rawcliffe and Hogg (14s), Kyla and Jade Otway (12s) and Greta Williams and Winstanley (10s).
