Hall's ton paves way for victory

An unbeaten ton from Stefan Hall saw Picton/Queen Charlotte College cruise to a 98-run first innings victory over Renwick in Marlborough third grade cricket competition action at the Renwick Domain on Saturday.

Batting first, Picton/QCC posted a formidable 269-4 before declaring at the end of the 44th over. Hall led the way for the visitors, blasting 103 before retiring late in the innings. Jesse Rawlings also played a fine knock, making 79, while Dave McDonald (236) was the pick of the Renwick attack.

The home side's chase never got going and they were all out in the 35th over for 171. Sam White top-scored with 44, Jason Hancock hitting 26. Jono Lewis, Corey Rawlings and Ben Hide all bagged two wickets for Picton/QCC.

Meanwhile, Wairau Valley scored a thrilling one-wicket first innings win over Wairau in the other third grade clash on the No 1 ground at Oliver Park.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, Wairau made a modest 142. Brett McKeown top-scored with 33, Matt Weaver next best with 15. Adam Pope and Kalin Thomas took two wickets each for Valley.

Wickets fell at regular intervals during the Valley chase, but their last pair got them across the line. Shaun Neal (18), Harrison Pine (17) and Daniel Allan (15) all made valuable contributions in a low-scoring affair. Weaver backed up his batting effort to claim 4-29 from his nine overs, while Vaughan Collins claimed 3-36.

Third grade

Wairau Valley 143-9 (S Neal 18, H Pine 17, D Allan 15, M Weaver 4-29, V Collins 3-36) beat Wairau 142 (B McKeown 33, M Weaver 15, A Pope 2-12, K Thomas 2-26).

Picton/QCC 269-4 (S Hall 103 ret, J Rawlings 79, D McDonald 2-36, D Roughan 1-12) beat Renwick 171 (S White 44, J Hancock 26, J Lewis 2-19, C Rawlings 2-32, B Hide 2-33).
