Proud history at junior nationals
The Weekly Sports Star profile on rising Marlborough tennis star Lily O'Fagan in last Friday's Express has brought to light several other Marlborough players who have featured in the finals of national junior events.
In August 2000, former top junior Holly Robb joined forces with Palmerston North's Natalie Dean at the 16 and under national indoor championships in Dunedin.
The third seeds, Robb and Dean produced a superb effort in the final, coming back from a set, 2-5 and match-point down to beat Auckland top seeds Julia Erakovic and Ashley Siddall 4-6 7-5 6-4.
In January 2001, Robb was again to the fore as Marlborough girls and boys performed well at the 18 and under national teams event in Blenheim.
In the girls' teams competition, the Marlborough trio of Robb, Tiffany Robertson and Petra Fischer were crowned champions. They overcame Southern 3-2 in the tournament final, Robertson winning both her singles matches and combining with Robb to win the doubles.
In the boys' competition, Marlborough‘s top duo of Hamish McRae and Manuel Conrad joined Nelson's Geoff Coleman in a Tasman team beaten 2-1 by Canterbury in the final. Tasman's win came via McRae and Conrad in the doubles.
Marlborough's Andy Tomlinson almost repeated the feat of Robb the previous year when making the doubles final at the 16 and under national indoor championships in Dunedin in July, 2001. Tomlinson was partnered by Nelson's Ben Brownie. The third seeds went down 3-6 4-6 to top seeds Jeffrey Birse and Joshua Muir, of North Harbour, in the title decider.
Marlborough's current top female player, 14-year-old O'Fagan, made the singles final of the 12 and under national championships in January, 2011. Immediately following that, she played at No 2 in the Canterbury team which won the 12 and under national teams event.
