Marlborough girls just out of medals
Fourth place in the 4km road race highlighted a strong showing by the Marlborough Girls' College contingent at the New Zealand Secondary Schools track and field championships in Dunedin last weekend.
Jess Barnes, Alex Parker and Liese Belgrave scored 74 points in total, Tauranga Girls' College winning with 28 points.
Individually, Barnes finished 13th in the 36-strong field, the best of the Marlborough Girls' contingent. Anna Tempero was 12th in the semifinals of the 100m and 14th at the same stage in the 200m.
Marlborough's Ben Wade, competing for Christ's College, was seventh in the 400m final.
Meanwhile, in club action at Athletic Park on Tuesday, Wade won the 17 years and under javelin and 200m events.
Andrew Watson won the 20-and-under 200m and 400m races, Dave Goodwin won the senior men's 200m and Sarah Barrie won the women's events for both distances.
High jump winners were Monique Aitchison, Billy Rayner and Goodwin, with Grace Aitchison, Wade, Watson and Barnes winning the javelin events.
200 metres: Men 17 and under – Ben Wade 1 (25.6sec), Ian Tang 2. Men 20 and under – Andrew Watson 1 (25.3sec). Senior men – David Goodwin 1 (27.2sec). Senior women – Sarah Barrie 1 (36.5sec).
400 metres: Men 17 and under – Ian Tang 1 (68.3sec). Men 20 and under – Andrew Watson 1 (79.3sec). Senior women – Sarah Barrie 1 (84.0sec)
High jump: Women 17 and under – Monique Aitchison 1 (1.19 metres). Men 20 and under – Billy Rayner 1 (1.70m), Andrew Watson 2. Senior men – David Goodwin 1 (1.45m).
Javelin: Men 17 and under – Ben Wade 1 (27.23 metres), Ian Tang 2. Women 17 and under – Grace Aitchison 1 (9.57m), Monique Aitchison 2. Men 20 and under – Andrew Watson 1 (34.15m), Billy Rayner 2. Women 20 and under – Jess Barnes 1 (14.10m).
