Young athletes from the Picton and Blenheim Rowing clubs are in Twizel this weekend for the Otago Rowing championships on Lake Ruataniwha.
Picton coach Dave Bugler has four rowers in action, led by New Zealand junior rep Mitchell McKenzie-Mol. He has a busy schedule of racing doing the single scull in open, under-20 and under-18 divisions while Caitlin Harvey, Alan Harvey and Maeghan Conner are contesting a variety of events.
Blenheim coach Bill Campbell is taking under-15, 16 and under-17 rowers south with high hopes of them advancing in performance from a very promising start at last weekend's Marlborough champs where they won 15 titles.
Leith Gilmore and Isaiah Miller are strong prospects in the under-15 double scull, likewise Rainer Whichman and Matt McCormick plus Zack Andrews and Isaac van Velthooven in the under-16 and under-17 doubles. The under- 17 quad of Bailey McClaren, Sam Beavis, Finn Pitman and Tim Mann is another good prospect.
Coach Campbell said, "Our under-18 boys will be pushing themselves to follow up on their winning performances in the small boats and fours and quads. Going forward, they need to be right on the pace to back up on their goal of winning and holding the Springbok Shield at Marlborough Boys College.
"There are record entries of just on 900 crews for this regatta and, as a club, we are really looking forward to the challenge."
