Treefellas upset title favourites Marlborough Boys' College (MBC) 2-1 in the Fairweathers Senior Summer League president's grade final on Thursday.
Unbeaten before Marlborough Volleyball's summer league final, MBC were expected to end their campaign with the title.
At Marlborough Lines Stadium, a fired-up Treefellas soon made it clear it was not going to be easy.
MBC narrowly took first blood, winning the first set 26-24. In the second set, Treefellas reversed the scoreline to level the match.
The schoolboys came out with more energy and tightened their defence at the start of the third and deciding set to race to an 11-3 lead. However, the experienced Treefellas players clawed their way back to 18-all and the two sides went point for point until 24-all. Treefellas failed to capitalise on three match points but on the fourth occasion, they converted to seal top-grade honours.
In C grade, Westmeat Geriatrics downed MBC Junior A 3-0 in the final.
The opening two sets were close, with some entertaining rallies.
However, Geriartics always had a slight edge and wrapped up the title, 25-21 25-20.
MBC fell apart in the third set as Geriatrics secured the 3-0 victory, 25-5.
Smashed 'Em Bro beat Safe Crackers 3-0 in the playoff for third place.
In mixed grade, Indevin Thunderballs won the title, taking the first two sets to beat Meaters 2-1 in the final.
Playschool downed Domin8 3-0 in the third-place playoff.
