Despite hot and testing conditions there were several fine performances at the latest Marlborough Trail and Endurance Club CTR event at Para.
While entries were slightly down across most grades, the competition was extremely close in some cases.
Pipping the the field in the 19km novice class was 10-year-old Carys Gale and her pony Silverstreams Little Gem, their score the lowest of the day with just 89 faults. Second-placed Deb Pruden and Banoffi were not far off the pace, recording a tidy score of 92 from their two final heart rate scores.
In the training 19km it was another junior rider taking the red ribbon, with Seddon's Brooke Thompson riding Soleil, totalling 99. Soleil's owner, Sioban Harnett, was second, further back on 118 on D'Arcy.
Anna Hynes, of the West Coast, rode new mount Rutherglen Jack and claimed the training 24km victory with 111 faults from young rider Sindy Kirkwood and Lily Belle Symphony on 114.
The 24km intermediate class was the closest of the day with only five points separating the first three placings. Wairau Valley's Pam Harris recorded her first win of the season on Tampa De Oro, beating her daughter Sophie Harris, riding Masters Silver Quest, by just two points, while Melisa Rae and Jazzmania were not far off either, a great effort for their first time in the Equestrian Sports NZ registered class.
Heidi Bulfin on Stonelea Sparkling Rose was the only open rider to complete the 30km event after a course error forced the second competitor out. They finished on 92.
In the 4km lead rein Sophie Laws and Magic Molly had a successful day, winning with 104, from Ryleigh Gale and Katie.
