Pair encouraged by results
Marlborough husband-and-wife beach volleyball players Greg and Micah Lindsay-Brown have recorded top results at international tour events in the North Island during the past two weekends.
The pair played at the North Harbour Open on January 19-20 and last weekend were in action at the Hamilton Open. Both events are a lead-in to the major tournament on the New Zealand circuit, the NZ Open at Mt Maunganui this weekend.
At the North Harbour event, Micah Lindsay-Brown partnered Aucklander Carli Boates to finish seventh equal out of 16 teams. They had two 2-1 wins in pool play before losing 2-0 in the quarterfinals. In the playoffs for fifth-eighth, they went down 2-1.
Greg Lindsay-Brown joined forces with top Christchurch player Tame Malcolm to finish fifth equal out of 13 men's teams. In pool play, they had a 2-0 win and a 2-0 loss against top-ranked Tauranga brothers Ben and Edwin O'Dea. Lindsay-Brown and Malcolm suffered a 2-0 loss in the quarterfinals, but bounced back to record a 2-1 win in the fifth-eighth playoffs.
Last weekend in Hamilton the husband-and-wife duo had plenty to smile about when they both managed podium placings.
In the women's competition, Micah Lindsay-Brown teamed up with a new partner, Australian and three-time Olympian Tamsin Hinchley. Seeded third out of 14 pairs, they won all three of their pool matches in straight sets.
After also winning their quarterfinal, they overcame second seeds Julia Tilley and Shaunna Polley, of Hamilton, 21-15 21-11 in the semifinals, booking them a spot in the final. The title decider against the top seeded German pair was an epic battle, Lindsay-Brown and Hinchley pushing them all the way before going down 20-22 21-14 15-13.
Seeded seventh out of 16 men's teams, Greg Lindsay-Brown and Malcolm produced the upset of the tournament when they knocked over the top seeded O'Dea brothers 16-21 21-18 15-12 in pool play.
They went on to win all three of their pool games, before downing Rene Kapa and Morgan Seymour 21-16 23-21 in the quarterfinals.
In the semifinals, Lindsay-Brown and Malcolm went down 17-21 18-21 to the third seeded American duo, seeing them place third equal.
Greg and Micah-Lindsay-Brown are both playing in the NZ Open this weekend, Micah rating herself and Hinchley as "a good chance" to take out the title.
