Robert Flood created Eastern States speedway history at the weekend when he won the New Zealand Saloon Championships at Cromwell.
Competing on the same track he finished runner-up in the South Island Championships last month, the Blenheim decorator went one better with a superb performance over Friday and Saturday night's racing.
The victory saw Flood become the first Eastern States driver in the Marlborough track's 31-year existence to win a 1NZ plate, which comes with the national title win, and the first South Islander to win the title since it was first competed for six years ago. In the 25-lap feature race, he worked his way through a high calibre field from seventh on the grid.
Full details of Flood's brilliant success will be in tomorrow's Express.
