Marlborough athletes will compete in the annual Mahar Cup track and field event in Westport this weekend, the 77th time the trophy has been contested.
Marlborough, West Coast and cup holders Nelson are set to do battle.
The top three placings from each team in each event counts towards the overall tally.
With West Coast enjoying home advantage, they could challenge Nelson's hold on the silverware.
Marlborough has a reasonably strong men's contingent but are short-staffed in the women's events. Leading the charge for Marlborough are Andrew Watson and Billy Rayner in the junior section, with Dave Hansen, Campbell Harvey, Dale Smit and Ryan Smith flying the senior men's flag.
However, Tracey Sims and India Ross are the only Marlborough women competing.
That means they cannot contest the team relay events.
