An up and coming under-16 eight was a headline act for the Wairau Rowing Club at last weekend's South Island Championships at Lake Ruataniwha in Twizel.
Flo McIntosh, Alex Pitman, Deenagh Farrelly, Lydia Mossman, Georgina Williams, Molly Somerville, Ruby McManaway, Jess Deaker and coxswain Meg Lamb headed off a strong field to win gold.
The under-18 four also impressed with a promising second place, that crew comprising Portia Barcello, Nadja Hyson, T J Power, Jess Donald and coxswain Ingrid Binstead-Pickering.
Wairau coach Dave Williamson said his crews' overall performances were good. "Overall, pretty happy how we went. The South Island Secondary School champs at Twizel next [March 2-3] and we hope to be well and truly on the pace by then."
Wairau won't be at the senior club nationals in Twizel from March 19-23, because their focus is the Maadi Cup New Zealand Secondary Schools regatta at Lake Karapiro in late March.
Blenheim, Picton and the Central Region Performance Centre are all sending strong squads to the senior nationals and among them for Central, rowing in Picton colours will be Olympic gold medallist Joseph Sullivan, who tomorrow tackles the Coast to Coast multisport event.
