An eight-strong Marlborough senior athletics team acquitted themselves well to finish runners-up at last weekend's Mahar Cup meeting in Greymouth.
West Coast won the cup.
With 30 athletes and Nelson only bringing two, they were always going to triumph by sheer weight of numbers.
Marlborough claimed 10 titles, with the senior 4x100m relay team of Andrew Watson, Campbell Harvey, Dale Smit and Dave Hansen taking out the McConachie Belt with their win. Hansen, Harvey and Smit filled the top three placings, in that order, in the 1500m and 300m races, with Tracey Sims winning the women's titles over those distances.
India Ross had a standout meeting, winning three senior titles - the 100m, 200m and 400m sprints. Watson took out the junior men's 100m crown and Billy Rayner won the under-19 javelin title. Nelson's Dale Pritchard won the Mawhera Shield for the most outstanding performance, throwing the discus 46.78m and breaking the record set in 1978 by 3m.
Final points: West Coast 366, Marlborough 120, Nelson 40.
