Metal war for stock title

21:38, Feb 14 2013

Up to 30 entries are expected tomorrow night as Eastern States Speedway in Renwick hosts the 2012-13 South Island Stock Car Championship.

Among the contenders, Marlborough drivers will be trying to make this season one to remember by adding a southern title win to the list of achievements already gained by club members. The championship is sought after by many clubs throughout the mainland each year and is renowned for attracting large crowds wanting to catch some of the high-paced action.

Having been successful in the voting process for this meeting, along with the South Island Modified Championship to come, the Marlborough club is committed to making both events a success. It is confident the support of this weekend's major sponsor, Renwick Meat Centre, will see that happen.

Host club drivers Gavin Marshall, Ralph Gillespie, Brent Goulding, Daryl McDonald and Ricco Gray will be hoping for a top result on their home track. Luck was not with them as they competed in the national champs in Christchurch last month. However, as a collective, the Eastern States Titans Stockcar team were runners-up in the New Zealand Teams title event held in Palmerston North a couple of weeks later.

Drivers and crews will travel from as far away as Invercargill to compete this weekend. The South Island title has previously been won by two Marlborough drivers: Tim Alexander winning in 2006-07 and Ralph Gillespie coming out on top in 2009-10.

Racing will start at 7pm tomorrow at the Foxes Island venue, with gates opening at 6pm.
