The Tasman Rugby Union (TRU) will launch the new season with a two-day coaching course in Havelock this weekend.
Current All Blacks resource coach Aussie McLean, along with Tasman Makos coaches Kieran Keane and Leon MacDonald, will share their views with senior club, school and representative coaches from across the Tasman region.
Havelock has been chosen as the venue as it represents a midway point for coaches in Nelson Bays and Marlborough.
"We're really pleased to have Aussie join us and of course our Makos coaches Kieran and Leon have so much to share as well," said TRU's Nelson Bays rugby development officer Kahu Marfell.
"It's going to be great to have so much rugby knowledge and experience together in one place and really beneficial for our local rugby scene.
"It will also be good to have coaches from Nelson Bays and Marlborough together talking rugby prior to the new Bayleys Tasman Trophy season."
The TRU has big plans for coach development in 2013. More resources have been diverted into helping local coaches upskill, with programmes planned for grassroots coaches through to the high performance level. The union will also work closely with Sport Tasman over the coming year in some shared initiatives.
"We are grateful to Sport Tasman, not only for providing some funding support for our coach education programme but also for helping us deliver parts of the programme.
"We hope to build a strong relationship with Sport Tasman this year and, with their help, plan on collaborating with other sporting codes too," said Tasman's Marlborough-based development officer Gareth Archer.
For the first time in New Zealand coaches will be able to gain the internationally-recognised IRB Level 2 Coach Award as well as the NZRU's Developing Rugby Coaches accreditation.
Anyone interested in getting into rugby coaching in the coming year should make contact with their local club or the Tasman Rugby Union through Gareth Archer, rugby development officer - Marlborough, 021 441 281, firstname.lastname@example.org.
