Cowley in control
Class wins to Oliver Cowley and Lee Stuart and a second place to Callum Radford were the major highlights when a healthy Queen Charlotte Yacht Club contingent competed at the South Island age group regatta at Charteris Bay in Lyttleton Harbour this month.
Along with taking out the Optimist 12 and under class with three race wins, Cowley placed second overall in the open Optimist class, collecting one race victory and two seconds.
Stuart recorded two wins a second and a third to triumph in the Starling 16 and over class, while Radford was second in the Starling 15 and under class and second overall in the 32-boat Starling fleet, bagging two wins and five top four placings.
Three other QCYC sailors raced in the 22-boat open Optimist class with Cowley, Jessica Cameron placing sixth, Iolo Adams eighth and Libby Grigg 11th. Podium finishes also went to Sam Chattor Waddy, third in the Optimist green 11 and over class, and Jessica Cameron, third in the Optimist open 13 and over class.
Meanwhile, on the same weekend in Napier, 420 duo Taylor Burn and Henry Gibbs finished second overall in a strong 12-boat fleet at the North Island championships.
Burn and Gibbs were consistent over the weekend, winning three of the seven races, along with a second, third and two fourths. Takapuna Boating Club combination Sam Barnett and Zak Merton won the regatta.
