Touch teams from Marlborough Boys' College and Girls' College qualified for the South Island championships with second-place finishes at the Tasman secondary schools champs in Nelson last weekend.
MBC lost their first match to Nelson College, 10-2, but bounced back to beat Garin College, 9-2, and qualify for the final. Again they met the unbeaten Nelson College combination, who proved too strong, winning 8-4.
MGC drew their first match, 3-3, with Nelson College for Girls but were unable to reproduce that effort in the final, losing 6-2. Queen Charlotte College contested the senior mixed grade. They lost to Waimea College, 4-2, first up, then Motueka High School, 8-6, before bouncing back in their final pool match to beat Nayland College, 5-2.
In the playoff for third and fourth, QCC again toppled Nayland, this time winning 6-4.
