The chances of Marlborough Boys' College, the national secondary schools division one champions, defending their title this year will depend on them receiving a wild-card entry to the finals.
On Tuesday, MBC took on Nelson College in a bid for direct entry to the nationals and came off second best. The college sides met in a best-of-three series at Blenheim's A & P Park, with MBC winning the first encounter, 10-6, before Nelson College took out the next two, 0-7 and 2-8.
MBC coach Graham de Boo was disappointed with the outcome.
However, he had high hopes his side would receive a wild-card invitation to the nationals, as Nelson College did last year.
De Boo mentioned the fine efforts of Tailah Love, Tyler Bird, Drew Roberts and pitcher Nick de Boo in the first game but bemoaned the infield errors and inconsistent batting that plagued the final two matches.
