Marlborough's junior softballers had plenty to celebrate over the weekend when the under-13 Mets team won their Little League qualifying tournament against teams from Canterbury and Nelson at A and P Park in Blenheim.
The Mets began with a 10-all draw against the Halswell Divas then hit their stride to beat Richmond Keas, also from Christchurch, 12-7.
In an all-Marlborough semifinal, Mets beat RM United 5-3 in a hard fought match. Going into the final as underdogs, Mets took it to Nelson's United Dragons to win 9-4 with a fine all-round team performance.
Mets pitcher Will MacDonald led the way and was MVP in the final. Coach Tony MacDonald said it was a fantastic display of softball from his young charges. "The boys teamwork and batting through the whole tournament was awesome."
Tyler Kendrick showed the way with two home runs.
In the under-11 tournament, Marlborough had more outstanding success with Central United defending the title they won last year.
The Nathan Gill-Nathan Peipi coached team won five from five, led by some fabulous batting from Te Ariki Peipi and team MVP Chase Kim for some outstanding pitching and batting.
In an all-Marlborough final, United beat Springlands Titans 10-0, dominating all aspects of the clash.
Other teams involved were Central Spartans, Halswell from Christchurch, the Richmond Keas from Nelson and Wairau.
Central United and Mets will play in a Grand Prix tournament in Christchurch from April 6 to 7.
