Davis, Earnshaw prove to be too strong

John Davis and Bruce Earnshaw made no race of it to win the Marlborough Pool Association's men's pairs championship final against Wayne Palatchie and Brent Simmons.

In the women's event Celia Bason and Nicole Chauval proved too strong for Helen Pope and Sandy Eden in their decider.


Men - Quarterfinals: C Fyffe & D Wright bt P Chandler & J Randall 2-0; J Davis & B Earnshaw bt S Whibley & C Budney 2-1; W Palatchie & B Simmons bt M Herlihy & M Haydon 2-0; A Gane & L Green bt R Patton & T Mu 2-1. Semifinals: Davis & Earnshaw bt Fyffe & Wright 3-1; Palatchie & Simmons bt Gane & Green 3-1. Final: Davis & Earnshaw bt Palatchie & Simmons 4-1.

Women - semifinals: N Chauval & C Bason b K MacDonald & D Moller 2-0; H Pope & S Eden b E Eriha & L Firman 2-0. Final: Chauval & Bason bt Pope & Eden 3-1.

This weekend sees the men's and women's third ranking tournament.


Men's draw: Section 1, Redwood Tavern, 9am: B Simmons, B Henderson, J Randall, C Budny, T Landon-Lane, D Jones, R Budny. Section 2, Royal Hotel, 9am: L Green, A Brice, D Wright, R Paton, C Fyffe, S Whibley, H Newton.

Women's draw: Section 1, COM, 10am: D Moller, H Pope, K MacDonald, A Stuart, L Bowman, B Day.

On August 6 the Marlborough men's and women's rep teams will compete in the Seddon Shield Districts Tournament in Nelson.

The rep selectors will announce their teams in the coming weeks.
