Van Antwerpen at the double
Gerard van Antwerpen produced a strong sprint to take first place and fastest time in Cuddon Cycling Marlborough's handicap event on Saturday afternoon.
The 40km event covered three laps of an out-and-return course on the rolling Taylor Pass Rd.
Calm conditions saw the handicap marks gradually close up over the first two laps. The final lap saw David Hutchison and Katie Batt (off 11min) finally dragged in by the strong four minute 30 second break group of Mike Murphy, Merrick Thompson, Joshua Sherwood and Craig Anderson.
The scratch group had split on the Taylor Dam climb with Craig Harper and van Antwerpen going clear of Sean O'Neill and Jeremy McKenzie. A big effort by the scratch pair on the last leg home saw them pull in the remaining riders with a couple of kilometres to go. Harper went clear briefly but was dragged back by a strong effort from Murphy and Thompson. The sprint to the line saw van Antwerpen a clear winner over Murphy, Thompson, Sherwood and Harper.
Young Finn McKenzie had a good ride over the shorter 27km course, recording a notable time.
