Nelson reclaimed the Blair Cup off Marlborough in the annual 18 and under rep tennis fixture at the Forrest Winery Marlborough Tennis Centre on Sunday.
A close tie was anticipated after Marlborough took the cup off Nelson last year - and the players didn't disappoint, producing some very close matches before Nelson eventually prevailed 9 matches to 7.
The match started with doubles and the outcome of these were to prove decisive.
After Marlborough's top girls' pair of Lily O'Fagan and Abbey Hogg had picked up a comfortable 6-0 6-1 win over the Nelson duo of Hannah Waine and Sophie Olaman the other three doubles matches all went to third set super tie-breaks with Nelson eventually prevailing in all three to grab a 3-1 lead into the singles.
The eight singles matches were split four apiece, meaning that Marlborough needed to pick up three of the four mixed doubles to have a chance to defend the trophy.
Although the home players managed to get wins in the number 1 and 2 pairings Nelson managed victories in the 3 and 4 combinations to secure the fixture.
O'Fagan and Hogg picked up three wins from their three matches to lead the way for Marlborough while 10-year-old Jade Otway secured a good 3-6 6-0 6-1 win over 15-year-old Amy Hurst in her first Blair Cup.
Marlborough coach John Gardiner was very impressed with the attitude and application of the Marlborough players in a very young team.
"The general level of the tennis as noted by many was very high and it was the most closely-fought Blair Cup exchange in the seven years I have been involved," he said.
