Schools play off for finals spot

The Marlborough Girls' College A volleyball side reached the top 16 of the national school volleyball championships in Palmerston North with a clean sweep in the qualifying rounds on Monday and Tuesday.

MGC beat Otago GHS 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-15), Otahuhu College 3-0 (25-21, 25-11, 25-21) and Riccarton HS 3-1 (25-21, 24-26, 25-21, 25-23), making it to division one.

In the playoff for top honours their first match was against Rangitoto College and, despite being two sets up they went on to lose 2-3 (25-19, 25-18, 19-25, 19-25, 6-15) effectively ending their top four hopes. However they bounced back against Otumoetai College, winning 3-1 (25-13, 22-25, 25-15, 25-20) before bowing to Mount Maunganui College 1-3 (23-25, 25-19, 19-25, 12-25) and finishing third in their pool. They play off for final positions today.

The Marlborough Girls' College B side, playing in the premiers division, lost all three of their qualifying matches.

The Marlborough Boys' College A side were also in the honours division. They lost two of their three pool matches, going down to Mount Maunganui 0-3 (19-25, 12-25, 11-25) and Napier BHS 1-3 (19-25, 27-25, 23-25, 11-25) before bouncing back against Shirley BHS in a 3-2 thriller (12-25, 26-24, 23-25, 25-22, 15-13).

This placed them in division two where they downed Hillcrest HS 3-1 (25-20, 25-19, 22-25, 25-19) and Gisborne BHS 3-2 (25-19, 25-22, 20-25, 20-25, 16-14) before losing to Mangere College 1-3 (24-26, 25-20, 23-25, 16-25). MBC will also play off for final positions today.
