Taranaki has held onto the Ranfurly Shield after an epic struggle with four-time NPC defending champions Canterbury in New Plymouth.
A try from Scott Waldrom with three minutes left sealed the deal for Taranaki who remain the only unbeaten team in the NPC after the 18-9 win.
Canterbury made far too many errors to take the shield home and were made to pay by a more ruthless Taranaki side.
The first half was a scrappy affair, with both sides making plenty of mistakes in the tough conditions.
The highlight for the home crowd was a well-worked try by Taranaki first five-eighth James Marshall.
From a scrum 30m out, Marshall ran, had a quick interchange with Jayden Hayward before he was under the posts.
Canterbury managed a couple of penalties to Tyler Bleyendaal. Frazier Climo also managed a penalty to give Taranaki a 10-6 advantage at the break.
Taranaki 18 (James Marshall, Scott Waldrom tries; Frazier Climo pen, con; Jack Cameron pen)
Canterbury 9 (Tyler Bleyendaal 3 pens).
