Renwick Kindergarten wins national award
Move over Michelangelo, the children, families and teachers at Renwick Kindergarten have proved they have got awarding winning vision.
Last month, the early childhood facility was announced one of five winners in the national Keep New Zealand Beautiful's Wall Worthy competition for their mural design.
Titled, We are Renwick Kindergarten, the mural depicts what makes Renwick Kindergarten so special, says Fran Andrews, project co-ordinator and teacher.
Fran says the team went through a lengthy consultation process with students, parents and teachers to come up with the final design.
"We wanted everyone to have some input," Fran said.
Fran said the physical surroundings featured prominently children's responses to what Renwick kindy meant to them.
"A lot of children feel that Mt Riley is our own. And she [the mountain] guards and protects us," she said.
The Wairau River also runs through the mural, with the sun shining bright.
Fran says many of the children come from rural families in the farming and wine industry and know what it is like to be dependent on the sun.
"It also dictates their playtime here in the kindergarten," Fran says.
The kindy was awarded $750 in Resene vouchers to buy the paints and dropsheets to turn their vision into a reality.
"It's amazing how many artists in the form of parents have come out of the woodwork," Fran says.
The adults will start painting in time for the completion deadline at the end term 3, while the students are busy working on mosaics that will feature in the mural.
On completion, the kindergarten will also receive a Panasonic TV and a digital camera.
