A 21-year-old man from Texas is lucky to be alive after crashing his car while sending a text message about not texting while driving.
Chance Bothe was driving his ute home from college when he sent an almost prophetic message to a friend: "I need to quit texting because I could die in a car accident". Moments later, he nearly did.
Bothe crashed off a bridge, then off a cliff and ended up in a gorge. He sustained life-threatening injuries including a broken neck, fractured skull and brain trauma.
That was six months ago - but an almost-fully recovered Bothe recently told Houston news channel KHOU that he has a clear message for young drivers.
"You just need to understand: don't do it," Bothe said. "Don't do it ... It's not worth losing your life.
"Yeah, I was text messaging on the phone, flew right off the road," says Bothe. "I'm very lucky that I'm not gone forever. That I still have things to do on this world."
Bothe's father, Bobby, also has some advice for parents.
"If I had a kid, 16 years old who was starting to drive? They could have a phone but the texting feature wouldn't be on it. That's how strongly I feel," he said.
