Volvo has unveiled a high-riding version of the upcoming V40 hatchback - just don't call it an XC40.
The new compact crossover was expected to be branded XC40 - following the brand's SUV naming strategy with its bigger XC60 and XC90 SUV models - but rather than boasting an all-new body, the V40 Cross Country is essentially a lifted, more rugged looking version of the incoming hatchback.
Styling changes include raised suspension (up 4 centimetres), unique wheels, silver bash-plates on the front and rear bumpers and sills, black plastic cladding on the bumpers and silver roof-rails.
Inside it gets bronze-look highlights through the cabin and a high-tech looking changeable instrument cluster with digital speed readout and rev needle.
No official details have been released by the company, but Greek car magazine 4Troxoi reports the car will be available with a range of diesel and petrol engines, though the report claims only the top-end "T5" turbocharged petrol version will boast all-wheel-drive.
The standard V40 model range has been confirmed to include a new all-wheel-drive R-Design version (pictured above) powered by the same "T5" 2.5-litre turbocharged five-cylinder engine producing 187kW/360Nm and capable of sprinting from 0-100km/h in just 6.5 seconds.
