Embattled barrister Barry Hart's collection of prized cars - including a Ferrari and an Aston Martin - are to go under the hammer this weekend to repay debts.
At least four of the vehicles for sale by Turner's Auction in Auckland on Saturday - a 2011 Ferrari California, a 2002 Aston Martin DB7, a 1958 Wolseley and a 1969 MG - are owned by Hart and subject to various security interests.
The Ferrari, expected to fetch at least $250,000, had hardly been driven by Hart and has only 349km on the clock.
Turners Auctions chief executive Graham Roberts said: "Either the Ferrari or Aston Martin would be ideal vehicles for summer road trips, while being just as comfortable on city streets. Regardless, they are guaranteed to turn heads."
Once a prominent defence barrister, Hart has been plagued by financial and professional strife in recent years.
Earlier this month the New Zealand Law Society found him guilty of misconduct and barred him from working as a lawyer following complaints of overcharging. Hart has indicated he will appeal the Law Society finding against him.
Hart took his case to the High Court today and asked for an extension of time to appeal. This was granted and his appeal will now be heard on December 10.
The greater part of the day's argument related to Hart's application for permission to keep representing clients he already had going through the courts.
Hart submitted that he needed to keep working or it would have the effect of ending his career. He also said it would have consequences on the clients he was representing.
Justice Lang reserved his decision until tomorrow.
Hart also engaged in a long-running and futile battle with ANZ Bank over the mortgagee sale of rural land in Murawai and Waimuku co-owed with his 75-year-old sister. He owes the bank $30 million and the properties were recently sold.
The auction takes place at noon on Saturday at Turner's Penrose. In addition to Hart's cars, a Volvo, two Lexus' and a pair of Mercedes-Benz' are also on the block.
