Here's five favourite TV cars used by cops, some in uniform and some in plain clothes.
ASHES TO ASHES
DCI Gene Hunt's Audi in Ashes to Ashes serves Phil Glenister well chasing and apprehending "scroats" from the seething mean streets of 80s London. The car was a huge success in early 80s rallying and it is deliberately driven crazily in the series.
STARSKY AND HUTCH
The Nike-striped Starsky and Hutch Torino was a star in the late 70s, but poor production made the car go slower than the engine note suggested. How it caught faster cars we'll never know.
This stripped-out Granada was the last Ford to wear a Consul banner. In manual 3-litre form it was used by Jack Regan to good effect in The Sweeney. He also had a Cortina GXL but, like him, we'd prefer the GT.
Used in the series Heartbeat to chase crims on the North Yorkshire moors around the fictional village of Aidensfield, the Ford Anglia in early Panda livery always seems to catch a few. It wasn't particularly quick but better than the Ford Popular before it.
Based on the Channel Island of Jersey, the Triumph Roadster in Bergerac was deemed quick enough to chase any quarry. It looked gorgeous, but was temperamental, causing production problems and John Nettles loathed it. No wonder he moved to Midsomer.
