Herbert Ridge, 37, was allegedly using a homemade electric siphon to steal fuel from a truck in Mesa, Arizona, when a spark from the device is believed to have ignited his clothes.

With clothes on fire the man ran into the street, then rolled around in an attempt to extinguish the flames before jumping into his truck to flee the scene.

Flames then spread in the truck and he was forced to leap from the vehicle which continued down the street, crashing into a garage and setting that on fire.

"I heard a loud boom, an explosion, and just came running looking for hoses to put out the fire," neighbour Tim Worth said.

Mitch Drum, according to azfamily.com, caught the whole thing on newly installed surveillance cameras and he ran after the suspect.

"His shirt was on fire, but by the time I got to him he'd taken it off, and it was obvious that he'd been burned," Drum said. "He was covered in soot and residue."

There is no word on how serious the man's burns are but serious charges of theft, drink driving, criminal damage and possession of dangerous drugs are pending.
