Motorists are urged to avoid parts of State Highway 6 near Nelson after a large diesel spill on Friday evening caused two minor crashes.

Diesel is on the road from Haven Rd to Whakatu Drive in Richmond, affecting 5km of the southbound highway.

Tasman police are still investigating the source of the spill, and are urging motorists to avoid travel in this area while it is cleaned.

Traffic is diverted through Stoke, and people travelling from Nelson to Richmond should use Waimea Rd.

There have been no injuries as a result of the crashes.
