Formula One legend Michael Schumacher is slowly being woken from a medically-induced coma, according to French media reports.

According to French sports newspaper L'Equipe, Schumacher had "reacted positively" to the awakening process, which was said to have started this week, The Telegraph reported.

A neurologist told the paper the process would begin with sedation, then the patient would open his eyes followed by communication using simple commands.

"Schumacher appears to show this type of re-awakening," L'Equipe reported.

Schumacher's spokeswoman Sabine Kehm asked the public not to pay attention to "speculation" but did not deny the report, The Telegraph wrote.

"I am stressing again any statement regarding Michael's health not coming from the doctors treating him, or from his management, must be considered as speculation," she said.

She told local newspaper Le Dauphiné Libéré his condition was still considered "stable".

The 45-year-old has been in intensive care since receiving head injuries in a skiing accident in the French Alps on December 29.
