It does not go but that has not stopped Christchurch's mayoral Daimler attracting 60 bids on online auction website TradeMe.

With a week to go till the auction closes bidding has already passed the reserve mark, meaning whatever happens over the next few days the Christchurch City Council will finally get rid of the vehicle it has been trying to offload for nearly 20 years.

The mayoral Daimler was originally owned by the British High Commission but it was sold to the council in 1975. It was last used in the early 1990s by then-mayor Vicki Buck but it famously broke down on her at least twice.

In August 1996 the council decided to sell the vehicle but it had a change of heart three months later and decided to retain ownership. It offered to loan the car to the RNZAF Airforce Museum.

The museum took up the offer but in 2008 returned the vehicle to the council because it no longer wanted it. The council tried to find someone else to take the vehicle but failed and so it has sat in storage ever since.

At Mayor Lianne Dalziel's instigation, the council last week decided it would try to sell the vehicle on Trade Me.

By early today bidding for the car - described by Dalziel's predecessor, Sir Bob Parker, as a "wonderful old thing" - had reached $10,720.

The auction for the Daimler is due to close at 7.31pm on July 11. Proceeds from the auction will go to the Christchurch Earthquake Mayoral Relief Fund.
