Pimp my ride - Ernest Rutherford edition
Rex Ball is all about the Rutherfords. As long as they are stuck to his prized motor.
He remembers waiting in line behind his brothers to help clean his father's car at six-years-old, dreaming of one day owning his own.
After years of hard work and a lot of help from family, Ball has managed to create a "one-of-a-kind" ride, complete with top-of-the-line speakers, Playstation 3, dvd player and flip down TV. And it's on the market.
Ball, 32, is one of nine children, five boys and four girls, all of whom have a passion for buying, selling and modifying cars.
Three years ago he bought his 1997 BMW 520i with plans of creating "something truly unique".
"After I got it, I spent about three-hours-a-day for two weeks straight just staring at it planning how I would transform it," says Ball.
"I watch Pimp My Ride, all of those kind of shows and take a lot of my inspiration from them. This is like the Auckland version of one of those."
The Mt Albert resident says he regularly gets stopped on the street or at traffic lights by people wanting to take photos with the now finished vehicle.
As well as plenty of blood, sweat and tears, Ball has poured a fair bit of money into his prized BMW as well.
He estimates that the car's signature Rutherford-money wrap cost him about $7000, the wheels $10,000 and the state-of-the-art sound system "was sourced from a good friend for a good price but all up, is worth about $20,000".
Ball says he only wants to sell the car so he can start on his next project.
"I love this car and am proud of what I have created but my head never stops thinking and dreaming, I just want to start again and do something even better," he says.
"My love for buying and modifying cars is never ending. I don't have anything planned out yet exactly but I will know when I get the next car. It will be even bigger and better."
The unique, tiptronic four door sedan is on Trade Me now and could be yours for just $6,200.
