A 94-year-old Cromwell man has won a new car after 20 years of buying raffles.

The problem is that he's past driving it.

Peter McKinlay and his wife Doreen picked up their new $45,000 Toyota Rav4 from GWD Toyota in Alexandra yesterday, which they won through the Heart Foundation NZ lottery scheme.

While her husband would have to be content riding shotgun, Doreen, 79, was confident she could handle their new wheels.

"I have driven anything from a 1927 Whippet to a truck. I have been driving since I was 16 and learned to drive going up and down a gravel road in a Whippet. When we moved to Cromwell we had a 30-acre orchard and I used to drive a wee truck around that."

Their win came as a shock, she said.

"I said 'You have got to be joking.' I could not believe it and really, I still can't.

"I said it will not have a tow bar because it's new. I have to have a towbar because we tow a wee trailer for Peter's mobility scooter."

The company had installed a towbar for them, she said.
