A burly bearded bookworm bus driver has been sacked for reading on the job in Istanbul.

The Turkish man was outed when video footage emerged of him deeply immersed in a book while travelling at high speed on a busy Istanbul street, Gulf Today reported.

A passenger shot the video which showed the driver with his book open over his steering wheel and appearing to pay more attention to the words than the road.

He then whipped out his mobile phone and talked into it, before returning to the book.

He occasionally glanced at the street to make sure he was not about to crash and did most of the steering with his knees.

The driver even went digging for gold towards the end of the clip, burying his pinky finger deep into his right nostril.

Goksel Ovacik, the head of the bus service company, told CNN-Turk television the man was fired and his driving licence was revoked after the video was sent to city authorities.

The passenger also launched a criminal complaint against the driver for risking the lives of those in the bus, CNN Turk said.
