Delays in store for commuters on the Kapiti Coast
Motorists experienced delays of up to 40 minutes on State Highway 1 near Manakau, north of Wellington, because of a house fire on Thursday evening.
Stop-go traffic management was in place north of the Waikawa Stream Bridge to give firefighters access to the single-storey building, beside the highway.
Fire services spokesman Mike Wanoa said several emergency calls were made about the fire about 3.20pm.
"Firefighters arrived at 3.30pm to find it fully involved. Both lanes [of highway] were compromised for a while, but traffic is now flowing."
No-one was injured, but the fire had threatened other houses at the rear of the property. It was brought under control by 5.30pm, but firefighters continue to work at the scene.
A fire investigator would be looking into the cause, Wanoa said.
The New Zealand Transport Agency said the incident had been resolved by about 8pm.
