A drink-driver escaped with his life but his $320,000 Aston Martin was destroyed when he crashed yesterday.

The luxury car crashed opposite the Royal Akarana Yacht Club in Tamaki Drive, Auckland, about 3am, police northern communications said.

The vehicle's front wheels were bent back under its crumpled bonnet and a lamp-post fell onto the car, crushing its windscreen.

Despite the damage, the driver escaped without serious injury. Alcohol was a factor in the crash, a police spokesman said.

The Aston Martin Rapide has an aluminium chassis and a V12 engine that produces a top speed of more than 300kmh.

The 2013 model Rapide sells for about $359,000 though the older model appears to be available for just $320,000.
