Craig Milverton was quick to move when he spotted a hoisted dump truck drive past in Palmerston North.

He pulled in behind it to enable his dash-cam to record the truck's movement and ended up capturing the moment it smashed into a traffic light.

The footage shows the truck approaching the intersection of Railway Rd and Tremaine Ave from the north with the driver seemingly unaware of the lifted hoist on his truck. It then collides with an overhanging traffic light, smashing it to pieces and leaving debris strewn across the road.

The dash-cam places the time of the collision at 3.23pm on January 15.

It was not known what company the truck belonged to.

Milverton and Palmerston North police did not immediately respond to Fairfax Media requests for comment.
