As American skier Ted Ligety won gold in Sochi, a bit of gold from his time in New Zealand resurfaced.

This video, with the description "Ted Ligety jumps his car in New Zealand", was put on YouTube in August 2008.

It was revived today by motoring website Oppositelock, which declared: "Olympic Gold Medalist Ted Ligety is Also a Hoon!".

Oppositelock wrote: "We have seen bigger jumps but it is pretty cool that a recent gold medalist is really one of 'us'."

Ligety won gold in the giant slalom at the Sochi Olympics this week, becoming the first American man to win two alpine skiing gold medals, following his success at the Torino Games in 2006 when he was 21.

Ligety is the reigning world champion in the giant slalom, super-G and super combined.

At the time his motoring exploits were filmed, Ligety was in the Queenstown area with the United States national team during the Northern Hemisphere off-season.

Ligety told the Southland Times: "Usually we play a bit of golf, have a night out or do a few of the other activities in Queenstown."

Hooning: File under "other activities".
