If you want to win friends and followers on Facebook and Twitter it seems you need a luxury car.

BMW, Ferrari and Mercedes-Benz are the most popular car brands on social media according to data obtained from social media analysts Socialbakers.

But in two crucial areas Mercedes outperformed its rivals in 2013. The brand attracted the most new followers (3,207,507) and, more importantly had the most interactions on Facebook.

Mercedes beat BMW, Ferrari, Audi USA and Porsche when it came to engaging with its fans on Facebook.

Mercedes' 21,999,293 interactions in 2013 ranked it second in all global brands, behind Disney and ahead of BMW, bike brand Harley-Davidson, computer company Intel and the Discovery channel.

One of the biggest surprises in the top 10 car brands on Facebook is the Ford Mustang. The blue oval's iconic pony car has more than 5.9 million followers which is more than Ford's own page (approximately 2.1m).

Another surprise result is Fiat's Brazilian Facebook page which has more than 4m, significantly more fans than the Italian brand's global page.

Nissan is the highest rated non-luxury brand on Facebook with 8.9m fans.

It's a similar story on Twitter with Audi, Porsche, Lexus among the most popular car brands in the 140 character format.

Ford is the most popular mainstream brand with more than 400,000 followers, ahead of Chevrolet and Nissan.

Volkswagen's Mexican division also makes the top 10 (eighth most followed) ahead of the brand's global Twitter account.

Ferrari doesn't have a Twitter account specifically for its road cars but @InsideFerrari account, which has a lot of formula one content, beats Audi's 670,204 followers. The Italian supercar brand has more than 774,000 followers of its Twitter account.
