Subaru has released a teaser image of its upcoming 2015 Legacy, due to be unveiled at this week's Chicago motor show.

The new Legacy will be officially revealed to the public on February 6, marking the 25th anniversary of the model that has been a mainstay of the hotly contested medium car market.

The new Legacy will also form the basis of the higher-riding Subaru Outback that also gets body add-ons to give it a more rugged look.

A concept version of the new Liberty was unveiled at the 2013 Los Angeles motor show in November last year.

Subaru has already confirmed that the popular mid-sizer will score sharper handling styling and more features in its newest generation.

One highly-touted feature will be Subaru's updated Eyesight safety system, which uses a colour camera to detect brake lights on the car in front to avoid a potential collision. The system uses a pair of stereoscopic cameras mounted either side of the rear view mirror to look down the road ahead, warning drivers or applying the brakes in emergency situations.

All Legacy models will be fitted with all-wheel-drive capability.

Details of the upcoming Legacy are yet to be confirmed, but it's understood Subaru will continue with the base model's naturally aspirated 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine. Mated to a CVT automatic, that powertrain currently produces 127kW and 235Nm of torque.

Also anticipated for the new model is a carry-over version of the turbocharged 2.5-litre engine that exists in higher-spec Legacys. With a higher ratio six-speed automatic gearbox tipped, that engine will likely receive a spike in power over its current 195kW/350Nm output.
