BMW's 3-Series range is diverse, and our Fairfax motoring team in Australia recently assembled two very different models to see which would be quickest on the drag-strip.

The first is the BMW 320i with a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine. It produces 135kW/270Nm.

The other is the BMW ActiveHybrid 3-Series, which is powered by a 3.0-litre twin-turbo six-cylinder engine teamed to a bank of batteries to help make it more frugal. It produces 250kW/450Nm.
