The dangers of texting while driving have been clearly illustrated in a dash-cam video released by a US police department.

Michael James Woody Jr, 23, reportedly admitted to Fort Myers police in Florida that he took his eyes off the road to text while driving at 1am on January 4.

Woody was lucky to escape unscathed as his Pontiac Grand Am swerved across the road, crossed a footpath, hit a guardrail, bus stop sign and tree before rolling.

"Texting and driving is a serious epidemic," police spokesman Lieutenant Victor Medico said in a statement. "We hope the in-car video in this incident is a wake-up call to those that text and drive."

Woody has been charged with careless driving and texting while driving.
