Shoppers had a lucky escape when a car smashed into a storefront on Auckland's North Shore this morning.

A man was parked in front of Outlet Books on Hurstmere Rd in Takapuna when he accidentally accelerated and drove through the shop window, Constable Brent Stewart says.

A witness says people ran from everywhere when they heard the crash.

"It's lucky there weren't any pedestrians there. If someone was walking past it would have been a disaster," she says.

Emily Francis works at Outlet Books and says it was like something out of a movie.

"It's crazy, it goes to show anything can happen."

Three customers were in the store at the time and everyone was at the front near where the car hit, Francis says.

She heard a woman scream and turned around to see the car in the shop.

"Normally when something gives you a fright you run away, but I was just standing there and I could see all the glass falling down."

Francis says it is a good thing a pole was in the way otherwise the car would have come further into the shop.

The elderly driver was examined by ambulance staff but was not injured.

"He probably got more of a fright than anything," Stewart says.
