A 63-year-old man has been left with serious head injuries after an unprovoked attack in central Hastings on Saturday.
Police said the man was walking down Heretaunga St about 6.45pm when he was struck from behind and robbed near the intersection with Allerton St.
Detective Paul Buckley said it was not clear if the man was hit with an object or punched, but he was knocked to the ground and the thieves took about $300 in cash and his mobile phone.
The man, who does not want to be named, has little memory of the attack. He suffered a large cut to the top of his left ear which required several stitches.
Buckley said police wanted to hear from anyone who might have seen the attack or anything suspicious around the time it happened.
"We're particularly keen to speak to a group of people who were standing outside a bar across the road from where the attack occurred," he said.
