A car fire that blocked State Highway 58 between Paremata and Hutt Valley this morning has been cleared.

Traffic was ''completely blocked'' in both directions earlier this morning due to the fire that started in a car on Haywards Hill at 8.40am, a Fire Service spokeswoman said.

The cause of the fire was not known.

There had not been a crash.

The car, near the Judgeford Kennels & Cattery, was well ablaze when fire fighters arrived.

An NZTA spokesman earlier warned of ''significant delays'' but said the road was cleared by 9.30am.

The driver was not injured, police said.
