Island hoppers: Tonis Facas with the Chatham Island bound kittens.

It's a long way from Kelson to the Chatham Islands but that is the journey two kittens will be making today.

The unusual trip resulted from a story in the Hutt News highlighting the plight of Susan McNair. She runs the local Cats Protection League and has been over-run with dozens of cats needing homes.

The publicity resulted in Chatham Islander Tracey Page contacting her and asking for two kittens.

The pair used Facebook to communicate and today the unnamed kittens were put in a box and flown to the Chathams.

The furry consignment was arranged by a friend, Tonis Facas, who says the Page family is one of the oldest on the island. Stephen Page is a cray fisherman and Facas regularly arranges to send items down by plane for him.

"The planes takes everything down there, whether it is Harley Davidsons, pussy cats, Kentucky Fried Chicken or a TV.

"It is a very expensive place to live."

Facas says the kittens will be well looked after and the island has a vet. Both have been desexed, which is a requirement to having cats on the Chathams.

Meanwhile, Susan McNair is purring after the reaction to the Hutt News story.

The following weekend saw more than 40 cats and kittens were re-homed. Donations of pet food also flooded in and McNair said people were very supportive

But her trials are not over. She has a further 60 cats to find homes for and kittens are still being dropped off.

"The weather is just not cold enough to stop them breeding. They are slowing down but I still have one week old kittens."

Our article noted that she was also getting cats and kittens that had been mistreated, in some cases deliberately.

That trend has continued and she is now looking after more injured cats, including Amber. She was dropped off by a man who claimed she jumped in to a fire.

"He told me he did not have the money to take her to a vet."
