Red-zone house collapses in 'suspicious' blaze

Firefighters battled two suspicious fires overnight in Christchurch.

Fire southern communications shift manager Andrew Norris said they were called to a fire at a "derelict house" on Avonside Dr at 9.50pm. The property is red-zoned.

The house was well ablaze when they arrived, and Norris said it collapsed while firefighters were at the scene.

It is the fourth red-zone house to go up in flames this year, after a Kaiapoi house was destroyed by suspected arson in February and two red-zoned properties on New Brighton Rd were torched earlier this month.

Then at 10.40pm the fire service was called to a second fire in a group of four flats on Gloucester St.

Norris said one of the flats was on fire but it appeared no-one was home at the time. 

Fire investigators would be at both scenes today.
