Whakatane police are looking for a man with tattoos on both sides of his face, who they say is dangerous and should not be approached.

Daniel Morgan, 32, ran from a Whakatane property today when police arrived with search warrant and the armed offenders squad.

Police went to the rural Taiwhakaea area of Whakatane about 11.45am to execute a search warrant in relation to firearms offences.

"A number of cordons were put in place during the search, restricting public access to those locations for safety reasons," Eastern Bay of Plenty area commander Inspector Kevin Taylor said.

Police are asking for public help to find Morgan.

He is Maori, of medium build and about 182 centimetres tall.

He has two large distinctive tattoos on his face, one on each cheek.

Information can be provided to police, or anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

The lower drink-driving limits from December are:

Great - too much carnage on our roads.

Overkill - targets moderate drinkers, not the heavies

Still too little - make it zero tolerance.

Sensible - punishment is in line with lesser breaches of limit.
