A man has been arrested and is lucky to be alive after destroying his car, blocking a State Highway and fleeing police on foot this morning.

The 29-year-old, who suffered a broken rib and chest injuries, was arrested at a Taita property about 2pm today after a tipoff from a member of the public.

The man had fled from police on foot after crashing his car and blocking the northbound lane of State Highway 2 at Avalon, causing big delays, about 9.30am today.

Senior Constable Maurice Partridge, of Lower Hutt, said police were still determining the charges the man would face from the crash and other incidents.

Damage to the car was substantial, and the man was lucky to have survived, Partridge said.

Police are investigating whether he was wearing a seatbelt and if he was thrown from the car.

The man had failed to stop for police, and the subsequent chase was exactly what police wanted to avoid, Partridge said.

"It's more in relation to that danger of when people don't stop for police," he said.

"People out there reading this, if you're ever in this type of situation, please think about yourself, think about your family and think about other people using the road.

"This guy is so lucky he didn't die.

"It could easily have ended in his death or someone else's." Wellington police spokesman Nick Bohm said the driver was the same man police were looking for after a chase following a family violence callout at a motel at the top of Ngauranga Gorge on SH1 early today.

The callout to the motel at 6.07am came after an altercation between the man and a woman, police said.

The man allegedly fled in a car down the gorge, but the chase was abandoned less than a minute later because police had identified the car and because of high speeds.
